WHat the Hospitals and Insurance Companies Don't Want You To Know Book Cover

What if the place meant to heal you is actually designed to exploit you?

From inflated drug prices to the silencing of patients to potentially AI-generated billing practices, "What the Hospitals and Insurance Companies Don’t Want You to Know" is a firsthand investigation into what I believe to be deep flaws in America’s healthcare system.

What began as one patient’s attempt to recover from surgery turned into a personal search for truth, accountability, and justice. This journey uncovers concerning patterns and questionable practices. Layers of dysfunction that often go unnoticed, yet affect millions.

What the Hospitals and Insurance Companies Don't Want You to Know:

How Tearing My ACL Turned Me Into an Investigative Journalist

A true story I wrote about the feeling of betrayal by a system that was supposed to help, and what can happen when an ordinary patient dares to question the medical industrial complex.

“This is more than a book. It’s a roadmap for anyone who’s ever felt misled by a hospital or overwhelmed by their insurance.”

About Lee Eisler

I have spent the past 11 years living in a van, exploring the U.S. and working a wide variety of jobs from seasonal gigs to fulfilling a dream of becoming a tandem paragliding pilot.

Life was simple and adventurous. Then one day, while launching a passenger into flight, I twisted my leg just a split second and I tore my ACL and Miniscus.

What followed wasn’t just a long recovery. It was the beginning of a unknown journey.

Already facing delays from insurance, I planned to use the downtime to write a paragliding memoir, The Life of a Tandem Pilot.

Then a bill estimate for  came the estimate: $186,461.68 discounted down $161,461.68 by inurance to $24,730.49 for a common 4 hour outpatient surgery.

The number was so shocking to my soul I began questioning everything. That's when the bigger questions began. Why were my insurance rates so high? Why did a 4 hour outpatient procedure cost 6 figures? And what exactly was I being charged for?

When a friend suggested putting the bill into ChatGPT. I downloaded the app, started asking questions, and didn’t stop. Within days, I was learning terms I never heard before. Needing the procedure to get back to life I got the book "Never Pay the First Bill" by Marshall Allen and figured I would just get a fair bill in small claims court.

But when the real bill came for $82,867.78 and billing questions could not be answered even more questions were being ignored.

Not being able to walk and months of recovery ahead, I dove in and became as informed as possible.

What began as a personal billing dispute became a full scale investigation into financial abuse, hospital profiteering, and systemic deception.

A patient turned investigator and an accidental "whistleblower." Over the past year, I’ve been investigating how hospitals may inflate drug prices, take advantage of nonprofit loopholes, obscure executive financial ties, and potentially use AI to influence medical billing.

With a background in activism and over a decade of minimalist living, I bring a grounded, persistent perspective. Driven by lived experience and a deep commitment to truth and accountability.

Through this book and a growing archive of  evidence, I am fighting to expose the truth, educate other patients, and hold the healthcare industry accountable one bill at a time.
